The figure quoted in the topic I linked was $5 - $10 a month. The money only adds up to the same price under the current episode model only if the developers release new content regularly. @Jacoby_Elderfun1
Personally I thought the devs should just raise the episode price (which is, in comparison to other games very very low) and take donations since it is a Christian game. But expecting the devs to front this game out of pocket, since it is an original property, makes no sense. It's worth something. Now if it isn't worth $5-10 to you, I guess you'll be living up to your name.
ToonTown Rewritten has to be supported out of pocket because the game is original to Disney. The developers can't make money off of it or the mouse will sue. It's like other fan projects, such as Bionicle: Quest for the Toa.
Idk too much about game development, but I think this is like me writing fanfiction vs. me writing original work. I can write all of the Aetherlight fanfiction I want, but I'll never be able to take a dime. But if I'm writing my own novel, I have the right to sell it. Toontown Rewritten is a "fanfiction" game, whereas The Aetherlight is an original.
