Outside of Eerie's bedroom window, I can hear her singing as she often does. I decided to seek out Eerie after my river walk with Peregrine.
Suddenly, a thread of purple Aether shoots from Eerie's window and swirls about the Business District. My Aethermeter pulses with energy from within my pocket. The pulse reminds me of Eerie, and the Unknown thief.
"Eerie, how do you fair?" I call to my friend.
"Well, my Aethermeter was returned." She replies, sticking her head out the window.
"In one piece?" I ask.
"Only emptied, nothing more." She replies calmly.
Emptied? What does this fellow want with Aether?
"And the result of your chase?" Eerie inquired.
"A mysterious, yet expected failure. There's something strange about this fellow, none of his actions lead to conclusions of any kind!"
"I'm sure they will eventually, however, I don't think it possible to hold him for questioning." She replied, a hint of sarcasm in her voice.
"As if it ever crossed my mind." I called back. Cinders, she knows me too well!
Eerie smirks mischievously from above me and closes her bedroom window. I watch the Aetherthread spiral around the grey buildings of the Business District. It seems to be lingering near Eerie's house, as if it was waiting for something to occure.
I spin on my heels and head towards the grotto. As I dash through the streets, however, my pace mysteriously begins to slow, even though I still feel as though I'm running at my usual pace. My pace continues to slow until I find my feet planted to the ground, mere feet away from the grotto entrance. My pulse beats loudly in my ears as I struggle to move, but I've long lost control of my mouth movement.
What's happening? I cry to the Great Engineer, Help me, help me please!
Just after I pray these things, the Aetherthread appears all around me, weaving through the air like a melody. I step forward to touch the the thread, it felt warm under my fingertips.
Wait, I moved forward, I can walk again!
Follow the thread, says a familiar voice in my mind.
Why so, A? I question my friend.
Miss A makes no reply, only the sound of the Aetherthread meets my ears. Suddenly, the thread straightens into an ever moving line.
Follow the thread, ay? Let's see where it wishes to go.
I follow the thread through the Business District until I come to the very same river. However, the thread doesn't end there. I follow it until a silver lake comes into view. The mist about it is so thick I can barely see the shoreline on the other side. The Aetherthread circles around me now, I can feel my Aethermeter pulsing violently in my pocket. I pull it out quickly and watch in wonder as the Aetherthread enters it.
The mist in front of me clears enough to reveal a small boat on the shore. I glance at my Aethermeter, and then at the boat.
Why does this fellow need Aether badly enough to steal it?
Suddenly, a crazy thought entered my mind. It was crazy, yes, but if this fellow was as desperate as he seemed, there had to be a reason.
I knelt by the boat and gently placed my Aethermeter on the seat. I smiled at the warm purple glow it gave as I drew my hand away. I gave the small boat a shove and watched it as it slowly floated away with the precious delivery. If my meter was ever returned empty, I'd send it back full the same way. After all, the Great Engineer wants us to share our blessings. My dear Aethermeter has blessed me in the Resistance, maybe it would bless the Unknown.
