Sorry, I really didn't mean to sound snarky. I just haven't seen anyone else talking about that particular feature, and I don't know how widely known it is, so whenever anyone has a question about a particular stat, I just point that out. I thought the description of the stat might give you an explanation. But, yeah... I don't really see how that would be helpful either.
What I was in the middle of composing when you posted
I agree that the effects of the professions should be limited to things like combat. No one should miss part of the story, not be able to travel to a certain place, or not be able to fight with a certain weapon just because of their job. (Or not be able to wear certain outfits.) Considering that you don't seem to get too detailed a description of what each profession does before you choose, and since you can't change it, I don't think your profession should have any major effect on game-play.
As to what the professions actually do, I think each one should relate to a different aspect of battle, or the game in general.
What is a medic?
A medic is someone who heals injuries, so I guess the medic's ability makes sense. Maybe they should make it less powerful, though?
What is a solder?
A solder is someone who is trained to fight, so like some other people have been saying, I think their ability should be something like Rage or Empowered.
What is a mechanic?
A mechanic is someone who makes and fixes machines. A person who fixes clothes is a tailor. Instead of focusing on clothes in battle, I think the mechanic's ability should focus on the items used in battle (some of which are kind of machines). Things like the accelerating apparatuses.
What is a scholar?
A scholar is... uh... hang on, let me think about that one for a moment.
...I guess a scholar is just someone who's studying something. So maybe their ability also fits. I don't know... Medics are good at healing, solders are good at fighting, mechanics are good at fixing... but how can a video game make you good at learning? I'll have to think about that one a bit...
Anyway, that's just my thoughts about the professions.
