So I'm going to do a little commenting and speculating... but before I forget...
SPOILERS (Don't read unless you've read the whole book. I am not accountable for any spoilage of story.)
First of all, I really love the way they give stories from Aethasia's past that mirror stories from Genesis. Probably I'm not the only one who's wondered what happened to, say, the flood, or the tower of babble. So it was cool to hear about the Aethasian parodies of these events (though I do wonder why "the mill stone", which seems like the tower of babble, was built before the Great Engineer left, and not after. Maybe they figured that a major construction project like that would take too long, since in Aethasia, it's been about thirty years since Lucky took over.) Another thing I wondered about was, "Who's Jude?" Obviously, the first thing I thought of was Judas, but after some consideration, I think Jude and his wife are Adam and Eve. There are quite a few other things I don't understand about the opening scene, but hopefully it will become clearer with time.
