Atrocious, it is certainly; difficult to read, yes; but should it never be read by anyone ever? I don't quite think so. The story has some merit apart from the unspeakable actions of the title character. I will admit that I was amazed at the ghost's engineering genius. However, I take pleasure in feats of mechanical ingenuity, even if they are not used for the best purposes. The story itself was different than what I had expected, the events did not happen in the order of the musical. At its core, the book only reaffirmed what the musical taught me; that people naturally long to be loved, even if they have no idea how to love in return.
