Meeting with the others lowered my mood once again. I know that what Goku said is true but that doesn’t mean I suddenly forget. I wish I could sometimes, but I guess bitterness is my fatal flaw.
Trying to let go of my bitterness, or at least make sure it isn’t seen. I went to meet the others. If bitterness was seen then it might tear the resistance apart. And I can’t have that happen. The resistance is to important for that to happen.
Seeing everyone well rested made me smile. Despite everything seeing them in good health made me happy.
“I see everyone is well rested after yesterday. Today isn’t going to be very busy so if you have something else that needs to be done feel free to do it.” Goku spoke once everyone was here. He looked over everyone making sure they understood. “Feel free even to go take a nap if you need it.”
Nodding I headed for the door. After not checking on my flower for a few days I needed to see how it was. Rushing towards the meadows, I didn’t take the time to talk, I just headed straight for my flower.
Instead of being greeted with a sprout like usual, I saw purple petals, which seemed to bloom overnight. Crouching next to the flower I ran a hand over the delicate petals before me. They were so soft, it was like touching a kitten. When I brought my hand back, the color came back with it. Staining my hand was the exact purple as on the petals. I knew this wasn’t a regular flower. For what flower stains things like this?
A brilliant idea came to my head. “What if I could use this to dye my clothes? They would look very cool having a purple color to them. I would have to add another color though, this bright purple is to much by itself.” Thinking of what other colors would look good with this, I picked the flower and stored it in a jar for later.
“Green would look good but it would have to be dark. Gold would look nice as well but I don’t know where you would get that color. Grey would look nice. Oooh or silver. White wouldn’t look that bad but it gets dirty to easily. I guess I’ll just have to use what I have.”
Heading to Lukas’ to take stock of all my dyes I finally decided to use the purple and dark green I had.
Taking out my favorite dress, the Shepherds Watch, I put the dye on it and left it to dry. While the dress was drying I went back to the meadows to collect honey, wool, and milk. I have this deal with the farmers there. If I help take care of the animals, I can have some of the produce.
After rounding up the alpaca’s, collecting the honey, and milking the cows I headed to my store room near the spring. Opening the door to my storeroom, I transfered my milk into jars before putting it in the spring to keep cool. My honey went in more jars on the shelves, and the wool I am taking back to make fabric out of it.
Heading back to Lukas’ to change into my newly dyed dress. I began to spin the wool making it into thread. After what seemed like hours of spinning my meager amount of wool, all of it was now thread. Heading over to the loom, I started to make my fabric. After the fabric is done I can dye it to different colors.
I love getting new fabric. New fabric means new clothes I can make out of my patterns. I know this might sound prideful, but I hate staying in the same clothes for longer than at least two days. I just get to messy here.
Knowing I can’t stay away from the beacon longer than a day before someone comes looking for me, I start my trip back. For all I know someone might already be looking for me and I have just not run into them yet. It is a big town after all, if done right I could avoid everyone for quite some time. But I don’t instead I enter the printing part of the Beacon.
Slowing my steps for as long as possible, I begin my descent into the basement. Slowly opening the door I wince as it creaks giving away my position. Glancing inside I am overcome with relief when I see no one. I have a short time to myself it seems.
Looking up sharply when I hear a noise to my left. I whip my head around only to see a cat.
I’ve never seen this cat before, and I have no idea how it could have gotten in here. The only way would be someone bringing it in, but when would they have been able to do that? I was here when everyone showed up earlier and I am positive no one brought in a cat. Though I guess they could have done it while I was gone. By this point in the day I have been gone for most of it.
Walking over to the cat I crouch down and softly beckon the cat over. The cat tromps along to me, rubbing its head into my palm. Scratching behind its ear I croon at the cat, whispering nonsensical words until it started purring.
Hearing I throat clear behind me I jumped up and whirled around, almost tripping in the process. I must have been very engrossed in the cat if I failed to notice someone coming in. Looking up to see who it was, I gave a noise of surprise to see Alexander. He hasn’t been around as much lately, trying to help the resistance advance it’s plans. I understand, it’s just weird not seeing him around. When I first got here Alexander was here all the time. But now he maybe shows up once a week, at best.
“So you like cats.” It wasn’t a question more of a statement really, Alexander didn’t seem surprised to see the cat in here, so I have to assume he let the cat in. “That cat Lukas’, every now and then I see the cat wander over here and let her in. She is a good mascot for the resistance I think.”
Turning from Alexander to look at the cat, I had to agree with him. The cat was a good mascot, not always here, but when he is you know it. “I didn’t know Lukas had a cat.” I heard myself say as I continued to look at it.
“Most people don’t. It seems to come and go, you never truly know where he is at an given moment. Everyone loves him though, so we let him stay.”
Moving away from me inspects the maps on the center table. “I see Goku has been making plans involving the fogworks.” Flipping through the maps I heard him muttering to himself.
“Do you think we’ll actually go through with everything that’s planned?”
He paused for a minute, as if weighing his options, before continuing. “I don’t know. We may, we may not. There is no telling. We just have to roll with the flow of life.”
There was silence for a long time before Alexander left, it wasn’t a bad silence, just silence. The silence gave me time to think about everything happening in the resistance recently. We’ve been to the Fogworks and back quite a few times in the last week, some are still there now. The Junkyard has been entered though not conquered. It’s been a very busy week for the resistance. Sometimes I wish things could go back to the way they were when I joined, but I know the more steps we take against Lucky the farther we get from being that group again. Which is good, growth is a wonderful thing, but only if you learn from it. I hope all of us are learning from this growth period.
If there is one thing I’ve learned in life, is that you never know what can happen. My world could completely turn on it’s head tomorrow, and I would have to go along with it. I may not see it when it first happens but every difficulty has saved me from something worse.
If my parents were never put in the Fogworks I wouldn’t have been put with the Grimms, if I wasn’t with the Grimms I never would have had the chance to learn everything I did, without the chance to learn I never would have wanted to leave, and if I didn’t want to leave I never would have joined the resistance. So I see change as a good thing.
I love everyone I have met here, though there have been times they made me upset. I still love them.
Thinking through all this I made my way back outside. Seeing all the fog and sorrow lining the streets I vowed to myself. I will do all it takes to make the streets better for the people. After all the people make the world as it is.
Seeing an automaton walking around the streets, I felt a spike of unnatural anger flow through me. “These metal monsters are allowed to roam the streets but regular people aren’t allowed to live their lives! It makes me so mad!” coming to a quick decision I rushed over to the auto and swung my hammer. Hearing the clang of metal against metal gave me courage to swing the hammer again until it was just a heap of metal on the ground.
Stepping back, I stared at it until realization struck me. I just destroyed one of Luckys automatons. If anyone on his side found out about this I would be hunted down. Frantically looking around I needed to know that no one saw what I did.
Letting out a sigh when I spotted nobody peeking out of windows, I started wandering aimlessly through the streets of No Mans Landing. Maybe I’m just not cut out to be part of the resistance. My being here has seemed to bring them more bad than good, and if I stay here I am positive it will only get worse.
Resigning to the new fat presented to me, I decided not to dwell on it. No good decision comes when you’re tired I have learned. Knowing I could make a better choice on the morrow I settled down into my bed hoping all would be resolved in the morning.
The day was bright and clear when I woke up, not hints of a cloud in the sky. Stretching my arms above my head I felt my stomach grumble more than heard it. Giving a weak laugh I decided to eat what little I could find before making any decisions.
Scrounging around through my box of food, I found a poptart that seemed edible enough. “Maybe I can get some milk from the meadows. I’m sure they wouldn’t mind if I got some.” Wandering out of the Beacon I started the trek into the Evergreen Meadows.
By the time I had gotten there, everybody seemed to be up and about with the daily businesses. It wasn’t overly crowded in the meadows, not like in town at least, but there were still enough people here that if asked could say I as here.
Going up to the man owning the only cows in all Aethisa it seemed, I asked if I could have some milk. “ You want milk?! Why should I give you milk when I could give it to people that pay me? Do you have any money for this milk?” Seeing how aggressive he was about this milk I figured it wasn’t worth it and left.
“It’s just milk. What does he think it is, gold?” Shaking my head I left the meadows behind. With no milk for which I love to drink with my poptarts, I settled to my fate of having a mouth dry as a desert.
Munching on my strawberry poptart I enjoyed the flavor while it lasted. This was my last poptart and I don’t know of any places to get them other than the Everycity. There was definitely no place to get them in the Forest, and I am almost sure I will be leaving soon.
Stepping into the basement of the Beacon with the last bit of poptart still on my tongue I stared at the people gathered around me. I didn’t know what they were doing here, if they were gathered for a meeting or just hanging out like old times. Skirting to the edge I knew if I was going to leave it couldn’t be while they were still here watching me. I had to wait.
“Hey Silver you’re back. Do you want to watch a movie with us? I think it’s going to be Moana.” Jacoby piped up when he saw me. “I guess it’s hang out time.”
“Maybe later, I’m gonna go look for cogs while it’s still early, I just came back for my pack so I could store them.” Not stopping to watch their reactions I just grabbed my pack and hurried for the stairs. “I’m leaving now, I can’t watch a movie with them and leave. But at the same time it would give them some better memories if I did watch the movie with them. I guess I can stay for the movie.” Stopping on the stairs I let out a sigh before turning back. “You know what, cogs can wait. I think I will watch the movie.”
Setting my pack back where it was, I settled down in a silver beanbag chair.
Hearing the start up of the movie I glanced up from where I had been looking at my lap. Hearing the music seemed like a blessing; it’s been so long since I heard music in general but Disney music is one of my favorites.
Relaxing more into the beanbag I let the music wash over me. Slowing drawing me into a sense of tranquility and peace. By the time the movie was over, I was close to a singing puddle in my chair.
“You okay there Silver?” I heard Jacoby say, closer than I thought. How could he have gotten so close without me realizing? Noticing everyone looking at me, I quickly said yes before they started suspecting something.
