"Hmmm," I say, "I think-" I pause as a notification pops up on my screen. An incoming audio. I press a button on the side of my goggles to listen. I hear the whole thing. I hear the man bust through the door. I hear the brief conversation and I hear the man carry or drag her out. "Are you okay?" The girl I had been following asks. I had gone pale. "I have to go back!" I say abruptly. "The girl looks at me, startled. "Wait, why?"
"The girl at the shop is in trouble!" I say as I turn and begin to jog down the pipe. "And it's all my fault!" I yell over my shoulder.
I exit the pipe and, without pausing, I immediately engage my boot jets. I rise above, then drop down onto a roof. I take of running, jumping from roof to roof. Scanning the shadows for trouble, I continue to listen as the drama unfolds.
I make one final jump and, landing noiselessly. Creeping to the edge I look down to see a big man and the girl from the shop down below. There is also another girl. "Here is. Big place. Snow lots. Alderceraft there. Go find. Prize?"
The big man looks confused. "You're saying Eldercraft left No Man's Landing?"
The girl nods. "Go catch."
The man turns and lumbers off, looking at the map she gave him.
I breath a quiet sigh of relief.
I start to rise, but I stop, an uneasy feeling creeping over me. I had been trained to read body language. A man could look me in the face and tell me the most convincing lie ever told without so much as flinching, But their body language will
still be yelling that they're lying.
There was something about that exchange... On a hunch I begin to follow him, staying in the shadows of the rooftops. He walks a little ways, twisting and turning through alleyways. Suddenly he stops and presses himself against the wall. He carefully peers around the corner waiting and listening. After a time he steps away from the wall and pulls a small device from his coat. Pressing a few buttons on it, he holds it up to his ear. "Ello, Boss?" I press a few buttons on the side of my goggles. There is a bit of static as my goggles try to hack into the signal. Suddenly it works, just as the man talks again. "Yeah, I did what you told me."
Suddenly a voice crackles through, sounding more computer than human. "Ah, good. Did you find Eldercraft?"
"No, sir. The girl wouldn't tell me."
"I suspected as much. Did they fall for the bounty hunter bit?"
"Oh yeah, hook, line, and sinker."
"I can still get what you want, I just need some reinforcements. Some other meddling girls showed up, one of which tried to pull a dumb trick and send me to the Snowmoors after Eldercraft."
"Hmm, those Resistance agents are tricky, but they do have one weakness. They are too confident in their abilities!"
"Anyway, I will send reinforcements immediately. Keep an eye on the place until then."
"Right, Boss! Over and out."
With that the transmission ended. The large man took the device and tucked it back in his coat. Muttering something about stakeouts, he turned and headed back towards the shop.
I turn and head in the same direction, processing everything I just heard.
I knew there was more to this. So, there was a boss behind this. I had my suspicions on who that was.
Should I warn those back at the shop?
I smiled grimly. this wasn't just another fox hunt, this was an all out chess game.
And if my assumptions were right, I was playing the master.
What is an Ember mark, @Missy_Direheart?
