I wake up, every bone in my body is aching.
My memory is blurry for a moment, then, as it comes back and sit up abruptly and bang my head on the metal top of something. I sink back down and curl up, trying to bear the pain.
Oh man, I'm in a tight space. I can't see anything, I wonder if they gave me any air holes in this metal box, or whatever I'm in...
I decide to see how long the box is. so I start scooting along the floor on my stomach with my hands outstretched. I make a swimming motion with my hands and find that I didn't touch the sides!
Huh, so it's just long and wide, but not tall? Wait...
I reach my hands up, and feel air!
I get to my knees and don't hit my head! I stand up and don't bump my head! I reach up, and feel metal on my fingertips.
Huh, I guess I was just in a small space earlier.
I take a step forward and suddenly my prison gets jostled and I fall forward with an "Oof!" It was then that I realized the prison I was in was moving!
"They're taking me somewhere, but where?" I wonder out loud. Suddenly I hear a cough and a scraping of skin against stone.
"Hello? Is there someone there?" A scratchy and dry voice reaches my ears. My heart fills with sympathy replacing the fear. I reach for my Aether pouch and bring out an Aether globe that glowed softly.
As soon as I brought it out I saw a rat skitter away from the glow.
Wait, that's not a rat, that a human!
I put a piece of cloth over the globe and reach into the darkness. I hear a gasp and touch wrinkled, withering skin. I could feel the bones under the skin. I feel a frail hand put itself on my young hand.
"It's ok, I'm not here to hurt you. I'm a nurse, I can help you."
"Are you sure?" the voice says, sounding scared as a mouse.
"Yes! I have food and water, and I have medical supplies. Can I see you?"
Slowly, and shaking all over a frail form drags itself into the light. I gasp. The person was smaller then me, and looked like a raisin.
"Can you fix this body?" the person asks, looking at me with empty eyes that I could see had stared into the darkness for months, maybe even years.
I nod determinedly and bring out my Aether meter, I sprinkle a little Aether over the body of the person and watch. The wrinkles, smooth out, the color returns to the pale face, the hair darkens to golden curls, and the eyes turn a lovely deep green. I gasp, this girl looked no older then me!
"Was this what I looked like?" A non-scratchy, non-dry voice says. Then she looks at me, "Thank you." She says, tears streaming down her cheeks.
I smile, "It was nothing, I've done it plenty of times. No, would you like some water, and food?"
The girl nods eagerly and eats and drinks everything I offer her. Her face shone with happiness and I thanked the Great Engineer that I found this girl and that I was able to save her.
"So, do you know where we are?" I ask, and immediately regret it. The girls face falls and for a moment she looks like the raisin I'd seen a few minutes ago.
"We're in The Metal Box. It's ever moving, never stops. Nobody gets out."
