Strategy: As the first pistol weapon on this list, there are many thing to note. First off, the average damage is terrible, although this is due to the high miss chance. If you are able to get a special every time, then the damage is boosted to 60 damage per turn, a highly respectable value. Secondly, it can hit both armored and dodging enemies. Now we will look at the weapon description: "Get ready to start a fire with these explosive weapons! And remember: oil is a fire's best friend." The first sentence is false, as the 'starter' pistols are unable to start a fire. This means no burning, which means no extra damage for enemies. However, on the upside, the burning does not remove cold or oil from enemies, allowing for more synergy with other fire and ice allies. Which brings us to the second part: oil is a fire's best friend. This is no more true with any weapon than with this one. As the starter pistols do not apply burning, they do not remove stacks of oily, meaning that if an automaton was sufficiently oiled (e.g. by an oil can) and you got a special every turn, you could deal 120 Fire damage each turn, which when including the oil racks up to an average of 96 fire damage per turn. That is some crazy damage and the ideal way to use the Starter Pistols. In summary, quite similar to the normal pistols except that it is a fire weapon, strengthening it against oil but weakening it against water. Unfortunately, this weapon does not cause continuing damage, but it doesn't need to against oily enemies where it can do massive damage. Additionally, this weapon works great with allies that spray oil and it doesn't stop the work of ice allies. With the ability to hit nearly every enemy in the game, the Starter Pistols are some nice all-around weapons. Just be careful, because they are harder to use due to their higher miss chance.
