“What seems to be the problem here, Newgadget?” The intimidating figure looked at Phileas, then he slowly turned to me. Even though I couldn’t see his eyes due to the fog-goggles, I could feel myself shrinking under his gaze, and I quickly reverted my eyes to the floor. “...and who is this girl?”
“Oh, sir, this is my niece, Scarlett Merespark.” Phileas answered confidently. But I could see through that look. He was scared of him too.
Zaul took a few steps closer to me, and I almost couldn’t stand it. I shook inwardly. No, Scarlett, you need to act brave, like your sister. Be a true Merespark!
I forced myself to look up into his foggy goggles. He smiled a most repulsive smile.
“Will you be joining our recruit of young officers, Merespark?”
Oh no. Why’d he have to ask me that question? Quick, come up with something! But it was too late. He had already seen the obvious “no” through my hesitation.
“She will learn, sir, I promise,” Phileas stated. Oh no I won’t…. Not now, not ever!
Zaul said nothing, using the eerie silence to intimidate me. He leaned in closer.
“Merespark,” he whispered, “that name sounds familiar. Wasn’t that the name of the Resistance leader?” He turned to face Phileas, who looked to the floor in some kind of pain and anger. Wait wait wait, was that my father? He was a Resistance leader?! My head was spinning, there was so much I needed to know!! But I forced myself to regain sense. If this was a trap and he wanted me to reveal something, I needed to keep a safety cover.
“I don’t know who you’re talking about,” I lied, “Who is this you speak of?” Maybe I could get my answers within my cover…?
Zaul continued his evil smirk. “Don’t try to lie to me, young one. You want answers because that man is your father.”
My heart stopped. I could feel myself about to faint.
“And the reason your sister didn’t come back from that mission is because she joined the Resistance as well. It seems like uprising runs through the Merespark family…” He stopped. “But I won’t let that happen to you.”
I barely heard the last sentence before I could feel myself falling. But a hand went out and grabbed me just before I dropped to the floor.
My eyes opened. I blinked furiously, trying to make out something in the pitch black darkness. Where am I? Then slowly, the memories flooded back. I tried to make sense of them, but before I could, a sudden burst of green light shone above me. Someone had turned on the lantern by using a switch, revealing the tiny room which I was being kept in. But I soon realized that this was no ordinary cell. I noticed dozens of pipes everywhere, and there was no door…
I heard my uncle’s voice from outside, making me clench my fists. “What are you planning to do with her, sir?.... Sir?”
Then the unmistakeable, bloodcurdling voice of Zaul Grimm. “This is the latest invention of the Emperor’s… made to control the minds of the enemy. Stay back and watch, Newgadget.”
That wasn’t good. What were they going to do to me?! Whatever it was, I didn’t want to wait and find out. I hurried to one of the walls and banged my fists upon it. “What is this? Let me out!”
Suddenly the green lantern which hung above darkened, making eerie shapes with it’s shadows. I could hear a deafening, unearthly, inhuman voice all around me.
“THE EMPEROR IS SUPREME. THE EMPEROR RULES ALL. THE EMPEROR SEES ALL. THE EMPEROR KNOWS ALL. THE EMPEROR IS THE CREATOR.” This statement was repeated thousands upon thousands of times, and it frightened the stomach out of me. I screamed and pushed my hands against my ears, trying desperately to block out the deathly voice. But no matter what I did, I could still hear it all around me, in my mind. And it wouldn’t leave me alone.
Then the substance that would change my life forever.
I gasped with fright as I saw it slowly arise from all the pipes in the room- its wispy, green streaks of death spreading out around me. I had never been so afraid in my life; I was so scared that tears started streaming down my face. I yelped for someone to help me, but there was no one to hear my pitiful cries. I was alone, and it would be only a matter of time before the fog took complete control of me. There was no way to escape, not this time. As I sat there, sobbing and trying to survive, something came to my mind. Through my blinding tears, I started to sing a song I suddenly remembered from my childhood...
In the valley
We will roam
Of death and darkness
We shall see
But we will not fear
No, we will not fear
For someone greater than death and darkness
Is here with me
Then, complete, utter darkness.
