America needs a moderate party strong enough to get votes from both the Democrat and Republican party. The problem is, the media is fanning the flames of polarization into far right and far left extremes.
The biggest problem is that sometimes multiple candidates run for office and take votes away from the two most popular candidates. When this happens, the winner does NOT have over 50% of the votes. The person that won only got 40%. This means 60% of the voters are unhappy with the results and feels like democracy in a republican government got squashed.
One possible solution is for a new election tool. Ranked candidates voting.
Let me explain better this idea. There are three Candidates. Adams, Burke, and Clark. Adams and Burke are more right than Clark. Yet, Adams is even more right than Burke. Pretend you are a moderate right voter.
If Adams and Burke were smart, they would recognize their similarities in platforms and work together in campaigning, so that Clark would get fewer votes. This way, their voters would get a right politician over a left politician.
So, come election day, as a moderate right voter, you would rank Burke first, Adams second, and then Clark. This way, even if Burke lost the majority, Adams would still have a chance to win, as long as enough right voters participated in the election.
Come the day after, people count who the voters voted for First, and find out that Adams got the fewest votes, but Burke and Clark BOTH did NOT get the over 50% majority of the votes. So, they go back through all the voters that voted for Adams First, and look at their second vote: Burke or Clark. Whoever the far right voters voted for Second, would win the election AND democracy's values of universal representation would shine through.
In my opinion, Ranked Candidates Voting would be more fair, and more likely to get the true majority, over 50%, rather than simple majority, like 40% versus 35% versus 25%. Also, it could give us a strong healthy alternative party to both the Republican and Democrat parties.
The only way to get Ranked Candidates Voting is state constitution amendments, leading to a federal constitution amendment. However, the political climate is too divisive for this to happen, and Republicans and Democrats are too power hungry nowadays to compromise because of the other side's so-called "hate speeches against the people". The parties' tactics of tearing down the other party is toxic to Americans in general, to the point that some are afraid of a civil war between cities and the rest of America, and thus lead into anarchy/two governments/states' rule/disunity OR one party could cheat the people into giving that party supreme power and control over the other sides' voices, and thus create a totalitarian government.
