Hello, everyone! President Newheart here. (That sounds so official, teh? ) I'd like to make a quick community service announcement about spam and flagging.
Flagging is a way to alert a moderator to something that is off-topic, inappropriate, or spam. By the definition of the forums, "off-topic" is a post that is not relevant to the discussion or topic. You can also flag something as "inappropriate." That is anything that is a violation of the Community Guidelines, such as bad language, inappropriate material, provoking comments, and personal attacks.
Finally, you can flag a post as spam. Now, the definition of spam varies, but if you wanted to go strictly by what the forums say, it is a post that is an advertisement or promotional in nature. We don't have much of that around here, so spam may also be a post that is off topic, unnecessary, or repetitive. You can read for yourself about the problem of spam and about ways to keep from spamming.
If you see someone spamming, AKA making off-topic posts, don't be afraid to flag them! Only the moderators can see who flags a post, and you're actually helping keep the forums clean. HOWEVER you must make sure that a post is actually spam before flagging it, to prevent making unnecessary work for the moderators. Another thing you can do is tell someone that they are spamming--just be certain that your kindly-worded anti-spam post is in a suitable topic, such as Talk All You Want.
Even the best of us spam every once in a while. It happens to everyone at some point. Just please be careful with what you post and where you post it, friends. Let's make the Aetherlight Forums a nice, beautiful, spam-free place!
