Okay, so I have a story to tell, and it's kind of an intense one. I suggest that you don't read this post standing up or walking around. Get somewhere comfortable.
Originally I thought this would work better as a set of memes because I was going through nervous laughter and thought it was all my problem (and maybe it still is), but after seeing what has gone on last night, I realize that this is a bit serious and sensitive for some. So I'm going to my usual resort, which is to write a long Miss_S post to explain, as usual. But make no mistake: this is different from a typical post from me because it's somewhat unsolicited, and so this is me talking to you from my porch swing underneath a green tree.
I'd like to tell you about my horrible week.
I agree, but the other thing is that we have to respectful of whom we are communicating with. It is important to communicate with the people in a way that doesn't make them hate you when you are done. One of the writing principles is to respect the readers and their wishes, whatever they may be, as much as possible.
This is not a church, per se, but the Body of Christ is here. Thus we are to be kind and gentle in presenting the truth to others (see Galatians 5:22-23), and that includes respecting the media and content preferences of others, and also how they use media in their lives. It also includes not breaking people's trust.
What happened to me this week was that someone on this forum recommended me a band that contains references to explicit content, as in the band has actually produced the stuff, and cannibalism. I did not watch said explicit content, but I understand that it exists. While it could be argued that this person is not aware of these references, the songs that they actually gave me contain references to despicable practices of people in the Catholic church, jokes involving certain male travelers and what they do in foreign countries to women, and a foreign language pun that is the equivalent of the English f-word.
Now it could also be argued that, since these songs are in a foreign language, this person is not aware of this level of content intensity that they have exposed me to, but I asked them if they had looked up what the words mean, and they said they had.
This person is a moderator of this forum.
They are also a trusted friend whom I respect. They gave me this band thinking that I would like it. To some extent, I may agree that this band has some good points about the content they are discussing, but I really don't like the romance lyrics or the cannibalism. I genuinely do like a few of their songs - ones that talk about history or learning to love again after hurt and loss that don't have the explicit content. So that's why I'm not 100% going to name names and blast them for dragging evil into the forums and Discord server. I think this may be a sensitive subject for them, and also I don't want to see my friend impaled by a mob.
Meanwhile, I have also listened to many of you tell me that you are concerned about the level of content that the forums are getting to. Someone told me that they wouldn't let their 8-year-old niece on the forums. Another person said they wanted content that was biblical with as little romance as possible from me. And so on.
I have no occasion to disagree with them. I have seen what happens when kids' forums go bad, like the worst possible version. All the concerns voiced so far strike me as valid concerns. It is my forever policy never to expose people to media that they aren't comfortable with - that is my responsibility as a writer. Actually, up until recently, I tried to avoid taking my media around the circles of friends that I have at all for fear of their disapproval.
I have gone through abuse and trials and tribulations and all of that, and playing metal music helped me feel like I wasn't the only one, you know? But if someone hadn't gone through what I had, they wouldn't need someone screaming at abusers for being horrible human beings over guitar, yes? The music that saved my life might ruin your day. A life where you never have occasion to need what that music says is a life well lived indeed.
And, well, lol, the cannibals haven't showed up on my doorstep yet, so I really don't need music for that right now. At least, I hope not! looks around for scary cannibals And yes, I get the joke - it's funny to make fun of sensitive people until you actually end up in the situation the song is describing. Then it's not funny anymore.
It's also not funny when those sensitive people are hurt by your hahaha funny joke.
But that is beside the point. The point is, on the matter of content on the forums, we cannot rely on the moderators to decide this for us at this point. Our authority is divided. We have no authority to impose our content preferences on others, whether good or bad, and appealing to a divided authority on these matters will be largely ineffective because the disputes will freeze them in inaction.
And now I know why. And perhaps, so do you.
Make of this what you will. I will not be revealing any more information as I am uncertain as to the course of action best to be taken, and may also be incorrect about the connection between one thing and another. I am emotionally conflicted, and may also be a bit of a coward. That's on me, but if I must challenge authority, I would rather not do so alone.
