Falling to Lucky's evil influence. It's kinda like they would actually believe the insane things spouted by the propaganda carts.
ShadowFire Fanglecraft (he liked to be called Shadow) was reclining near the back of Illiara's diner, sipping his 1% liquid fog extract and nibbling on some excellent house strawberry shortcake, when a strange character with green eyes came up to him. "Hey," he whispered. "Mind if I sit with you?"
Shadow was taken aback. This stranger was clearly trying to hide from someone. He looked very frightened. Especially given that an automation was following him around. "Yes, I guess," he whispered, [...] "Who is out to get you?"
"That guy," said Kieran nervously, indicating Perry Laden[...]
"Bad news, huh?" whispered the Shadow.
Kieran nodded, unable to speak. He suddenly felt sick to his stomach - but then he saw the 1% liquid fog extract. "Can I try this?" he asked Illiara.
"Sure," Illiara said. "We have 1%, 2%, 5%, and 10%. Which one would you like?
"10%" Kieran said.
"10%!" said the Shadow. "Are you mad?"
Kieran looked at him with unmoving eyes, utterly confused. Illiara poured him a cup, and he drank. Instantly his fear melted away, and he felt bliss. He felt calm. He was not Perry's enemy. There was no need to be scared. He was with Perry; he was not Perry's enemy. All he would have to do was accept whatever punishment Perry would give him, and he would be fine. Punishment was good. Why was he trying to avoid it?
"Mind if I sit with you guys?" Perry said, edging over to the table. [...]
"No," said the Shadow, looking at Kieran with concern.
"It's fine," said Kieran. "He's a friend of mine." People who punish me are my friends, after all.
"Are you sure?" the Shadow said. "It's the fog, man! Wake up!"
"It is," Kieran said. "The glorious fog that makes everything better." He poured himself another glass.
"No," the Shadow said, moving the glass away from Kieran. "You are out of your mind, man. You need help."
The Shadow turned back to Perry. "I'm sorry sir," he said. "My friend is not well. I suggest that you sit somewhere else."
"I need it!" shouted Kieran, sprawling across the table and reaching for his glass. "You're the one who has gone mad! The fog makes us powerful, better."
The Shadow pushed his chair backwards and slid the cup across the bar to Illiara. "You can't do that!" Kieran shouted. "I paid for that!"
"Dude," Perry said, looking at the Shadow. "What in Aesthasia. Give the man back his drink."
"Absolutely not," the Shadow said. "He's fallen to Lucky's evil influence."
"What are you talking about?" Kieran said. "Lucky is exactly what Aethasia needs. If everyone would submit to his rule, everything would be better! More fog everywhere, less worrying about trivial matters, all cares floating away. Nothing but glorious punishments all the time!"
"If you are so hard up against that fog stuff," said Ariella to the Shadow, "why are you drinking it?"
"Not by choice," said the Shadow. "Neccessity."
"What are you talking about?" Ariella said. "Nobody has to drink that stuff."
The Shadow shook his head. "There are some things best left not understood, Ariella, and my unfortunate...condition...is one of them." The Shadow walked away from Ariella and off into the night.
"Weird," said Ariella.
"He's wrong," said Miss_S. "Fog doesn't make powers more controllable. It causes the disruptions that make them go off at random."
"What are you talking about?" said Ariella.
"Forget it," said Miss_S. "Forget what I said. Fog makes nothing better though. Just remember that."
"But..." Ariella objected.
"Ariella," said Miss_S. She got up and brought Ariella the two bottles of poison, past a completely dumbfounded Kieran. Ariella shuddered. "Fog is not normally a liquid." said Miss_S. "Fog is a gas, obviously. And I would recommend drinking neither of these - it will eat your brain. But check out the ingredient list for this" Miss_S held up the 10%. "Fog, water, sugar, malt stablizer. But this stuff" - "Miss_S held up the 1% - needs something to hack the infused gas down. So this contains, Fog, water, sugar, and Aether."
Ariella grabbed the bottle. "I'll go find him."
Miss_S grabbed her arm. "Not until you know why. The Aether is what stabilizes him. Not the fog. Now you can run."
