I took a deep breath and looked steadily at the angry young man.
"If they were alive, would you be here?"
There was a long silence between us both.
"If there is one thing I've learned about the Great Engineer, it is that He never takes without intending to give. Occasionally, He even returns the very thing we lose and we treasure it more because we lost it for a time."
I turned my gaze aside to one of the crystals. The Aether that swirled within seemed to form strange patterns before my eyes. What these patterns meant, I could only guess.
"I know not what He intends to give you. I only see the present fire in your soul. If your loss kindled that flame, perhaps that was why your home was taken from you. Chicks that are never shoved out of the nest never learn to fly alone. Perhaps in taking your grounded home, the Great Engineer would give you the sky."
I ran my hand slowly up the gleaming crystal towards one of its pointed peaks. The patterns within continued to shift.
"Life is full of undulations. like currents in the air. It is ever changing, yet always the same. The high points and low points never last your entire life. Your present mourning will not last. There will be joy in the end."
I turned back to the raptor.
"I will not say, 'Do not weep' for not all tears are evil. There is no shame in mourning those you loved and have lost."
