I jerk around hearing banging on a door just beside the sleeping guard. My hand goes to my hammer when I realize what the voice outside the door is saying.
"LET ME IN! Please let me in! It's Nola! Let...me...in!" I hear accompanied by thumps and raps. The guard jolts awake and reaches for his keys to open the door.
I guess he doesn't realize it's not a guard.
He opens the door and Nola jumps forward, right into the guard's waiting arms. Her eyes grow wide with fear and panic and she struggles weakly as the guard holds her tight. Then to my great horror the guard brings out a syringe he had in his pocket filled with green liquid and jabs it into Nola back! I feel myself growing limp with horror as Nola lets out a shriek and then slumps against the guard's chest.
I frantically look around at Kitty and Vytanni fighting with the guards. Then I bring out my Ice hammer and smash through the cage like door separating me from Nola and the guard. With a wild war cry I bring my hammer smashing down on the guard holding Nola. He crumples to the ground and I quickly catch Nola as she falls.
"Hey Windstorm?" I yell over the battle noise, hoping he could hear me. "Nola's hurt! I'm taking her back to the Sanctuary!"
"Ok!" I hear Kitty yell and, lifting Nola onto my back. I scramble out of the Fogworks and take off toward the Old Mount.
Half way through, however, Nola's starts feeling heavier with each wingstroke. Sweating I pull her up with all my might, but it's not enough. I plummet downward, the strength in my wings completely gone.
Holding Nola close I send up a prayer to the Great Engineer, hoping we both wouldn't die or be seriously injured when we hit the ground. Thankfully we hit several trees before we hit the ground and the only thing I got was bruises.
Seeing a cave nearby I drag Nola to it and make her as comfortable as possible with a leaf pillow and a warm fire.
Without my medical bags I can't help Nola like I should! Oh I wish I could fit them in my pocket or something. That guard put pure Fog in her! Only pure, untouched Aether can heal that!
I did give her all of my Aethermeter, hoping it would help a little. When the sky was growing dark I put Aether on the fire to keep it safe and went to sleep.
Lila a voice called, it seemed to echo in my mind. Lila, my child, wake up The voice sounded familiar. The way it said "my child". I felt a warm feeling wash over me, as if I was being protected by a strong person I knew I could trust.
Lila, wake up, we have work to do. the voice said again. But I don't want to wake up! And what work? I replied in my mind.
We have to heal Nola, Lila. Wake up, child, there's no time to waste.
Nola? But I can't heal her! I don't have the right materials! There's nothing I can do.
Lila, wake up. We have to heal Nola. Lila, Lila, "Lila." I sat up quickly and looked around. I didn't see anyone near me.
Was it a dream?
"No my child, it wasn't a dream." I whip around and gasp. The Scarlet Man looks down on me, his red cape flows in the strong wind. "We have work to do." He says gently, and offers a hand to me.
"Right, Nola." I take His hand and look at Nola. She's still unconscious and lying in the makeshift bed I'd made for her the night before. I look out of the cave and see the sky brightening with the sun's rise. It was early morning.
"Did you bring pure Aether?" I ask, turning to the Scarlet Man. He steps over beside Nola and sits down, motioning me to do the same.
"No." He replies calmly. I begin to feel very confused.
"You didn't? But that's the only way to heal someone with pure Fog in them!"
"There's another way." The Scarlet Man says smoothly. My eyes widen in awe.
"Another way?" I breathe. He nods, then puts his gloved hand on my shoulder.
"And only you can do it, my child." He turns back to Nola and gets up. I look up at the strong, muscular build of the Scarlet Man, He took my breath away every time I saw Him. Then I think about what He'd just said.
"Only me? Why me? Why can't other nurses do it to? What if they're in the same situation and they don't know what to do? And...and they can't save their friend? Can I teach them how to do it?"
The Scarlet Man considers for a moment before answering. "You can teach them how to do it."
Relief flows through me, I was glad I could share this new discovery with other nurses. It would be very helpful to know in a time of need.
"So, how do I do it?" I ask, eager to save my friend who's life was at risk.
"Love." The Scarlet Man replies simply.
"Wait, what? What do you mean?"
"Love is the opposite of hate, is it not?"
I nod, but I still didn't understand. The Scarlet Man continues.
"Fogrock is filled with hate. It is mined by hate, it is made into Fog by hate, it is put out into Aethasia by hate. If you love, that destroys all hate."
I didn't understand completely. But I understood enough to know how to save Nola. I nodded with determination and looked back to ask the Scarlet Man one more thing, but He was gone. I was alone with Nola.
I take a deep breath and, lifting her up, placed Nola's head on my crisscrossed legs. I look at her pale face and feel worry rushing into me.
What if I don't do it right? What if it's not enough? What if I can't save her? Oh Nola!
As I sit there worrying my head off I suddenly hear a soft "Mew?" and look up. There in the entrance to the cave is Willow, her blue-gray fur shining in the newly risen sun.
"Willow!" I cry and hold out my arms to her. She runs forward and rubs my hand all over, purring loudly and licking my finger tips.
I thought I'd never see you again! Oh I'm so glad to see you Willow!
Oh yes I know. I'm glad to see you to Lila.
How did you find me?
Um...I'm not sure. I was hunting in the forest when a red human suddenly appeared, picked me up, and then put me back down again. I found myself no longer in the forest and I saw you in here.
Wow! The Scarlet Man brought you here! I'm so glad He did to! I think you need to help me heal Nola.
Nola? Who's Nola? You mean that girl you're holding instead of me? Why does she need healing? And why am I going to be forced to do it??
She needs healing because she has pure Fog in her blood and is going to die if we don't get it out!
Oh dear. That is terrible. Oh well, what do we have to do?
We have to love.
Willow tilted her head, a gesture that she was confused. "The Scarlet Man said that in order to destroy the hate in Nola, we need to give her love. It should be easy enough." I explain. "Here, I'll hold you in my lap and we both touch Nola. It'll make a healing circle!"
I put Nola down on the ground and and Willow lies down beside me. I put a hand on Nola's arm and Willow puts a paw on her leg, and her foot on my leg. Then I close my eyes and think of everything I love: Animals, music, friends, Jefferson, Aethasia, Aether, the Scarlet Man, the Great Engineer, nature, snow, my wings, being able to fly, everything I loved came into my mind. I felt a healing flow from me to my near death friend.
Then a wonderful feeling washed over me: it was mixed between awe, comfort, and a surge of joy. The Great Engineer had joined the circle! And His power made it all complete. A few minutes later I open my eyes and look at Nola. The color had returned to her face and she was breathing easily. I see her eyes flutter open and I attack with bear hug before she can say anything.
"NOLA!! Nola you're alive!! Oh Nola that was wonderful! Me and Willow started healing you with love but then the Great Engineer came and He did the real work and now you're well!!! Oh I'm so glad!!" I squeeze her hard then let go. I smile at her confused face. "How are you feeling?"
(I'm so sorry this was long. I get carried away. I hope ya'll don't mind! )
