Summary—LLPP Chapter 1
Chapter 1.
turn around! go back while you still can!
I felt so sure earlier but now that I was going through with it I wasn't so sure....
Oh, stop being a baby! you'll be fine!
I told myself.
I turned the corner and was about to walk across the intersection of hall ways but I heard some thing and stopped * stomp,stomp,stomp * foot steps...... metal footsteps! I looked for some where to hide but the hallway behind me was straight and there would be no way I could make it to the other side other side before he came down the hall and the hall to the right was where the guard was. The only way to go was straight, but that meant crossing in front of the curfew patrol officer. I sucked in a breath and sprinted across the hallway. "you there! STOP!" the officer yelled when I didn't stop he started running after me. I couldn't stop now! If I got caught things would only get worse so I kept running. As soon as I turned the corner my heart dropped; In front of me was a 18 feet long hallway of locked metal doors with a big concrete wall at the end of it.
* clank,clank,clank *
I ran to each of the doors praying that one was unlocked. I came to the last door and pushed on the handle. It flung open and I stumbled inside. I slammed the door shut and ducked behind some barrels of who-knows-what and held my breath. after what seemed like forever the officer burst into the room. the door flew open and slammed into the wall with such force a bottle of solvent fell of the shelf and smashed on the ground he (it) looked around mumbled a curse under his breath and ran back down the hallway (without seeing me-might I add).
I ran back to the intersection of hallways and ran back the way I originally planed on going. I came to the detainment rooms (where they kept the kids who attempted to escape the mines) I walked down to room 6 and pushed the door open (surprisingly it wasn't locked).
Inside the room was dark the only light came through a 9 inch window high up near the wall-"who are you? what do you want?" came a voice from the far corner of the room. "I'm L-lizzy. some one told me you had a m-map?" I said "I might.... but It's going to cost you." I pulled out a box of fresh fruit from my satchel and handed it to him. "FRUIT?! and fresh to?!?!? how did you get these?!?!?" "no time. I need that map...now." I said "right" he stood and walked to the window and pulled a brick out of the wall behind it was a compartment just big enough to fit a cog in and pulled out a piece of paper. "here," he gave me the map "the fastest way to get back to the cafeteria-assuming that's still next to the sleeping quarters-is to take hallway 3 to intersection 63 then to take hallway 23 to 4 to 93 take a right then you'll be at the door." "thanks" I said and ran the way he told me.
(this wasn't all of chapter 1. my hand just hurt from all the typing.)

DONG!DONG!DONG! "get up! get up NOW!" mumbles and groans of "whyyyyy" "what's going on?" and "It's to early!"s came from the other orphan-slaves trapped in the mines. "SILENT! EVERY ONE IN A LINE!" I was sore from pushing carts full of rocks all day, then the whole running-for-my-life episode, and all I wanted to do was fall on my face and sleep. but noOOOOOooo now I had to stand in the same spot for an hour while the "head assistant master" called out names (numbers really. kids in the west mines got letters like "LIC"=Lizzy iron craft while kids in the east (us) got numbers: "12-9-3"=LIC=Lizzy Iron Craft. and so on.)
"If you hear your number sit down! 14-6-3! 4-22-1! 9-5-14!......"
come on already! my legs are burning!!!! I almost screamed.
then right on que he said "12-9-3!" "here!" I said and dropped to the floor.
21 minutes later (yes, I counted) he finally stopped shouting numbers and said "Every one might be wondering why I woke you up. one of you *dramatic pause * tried to escape but we caught them and are holding them in the detainment rooms if any of you knew about this or know some one who is involved please come forward." (I knew he was lying about catching the person who tried to escape because "the person who tried to escape" was me and I didn't get caught. he just said that to discourage any one else from trying to escape.)
I hope no one saw me sneak out!
no one moved and the guard said "if you give us info you'll get double portions at lunch." no one came forward so he said "fine then! go back to bed!" with a dramatic twist of his hand above his head he turned around and strutted out of the room. I sank back down on to my cot and pulled the torn blanket around my shoulders-that was to close.... but now that I have a map it will be easier to get out of these mines! I just need the right time...…. then I drifted off to sleep.
