Half the plot of War Room could have been resolved if she had just opened up and talked to her husband about his issue like a normal person would do. The film would be over in 20 minutes.

It would have been far more realistic for the woman to pray for courage to confront her husband.

I think the point was, he was beyond listening to her. Even if she had confronted him he would’ve just gotten madder and the situation would be even worse.

I know people in real life who struggle with problems like this and I can say the way they presented it seemed very accurate to me.

Also, keep in mind that the writers are not trying to model a perfect Christian, they are trying to show that God will work through imperfect people (good thing cause nobody’s perfect), and hears us when we pray.

most of the old woman’s dialogue came across to me as more wishful thinking than spiritual guidance

I think the advice she gave was a mixture of scripture and personal experience. I don’t know that I’d call it wishful thinking.

Here are some verse that talk about how we should pray.

And at this point, I’m going to abdicate the debate about the quality of the film because in order to engage it I would need to watch the film again, which I ironically do not wish to do.

I do appreciate the verses about prayer, and yes, I do think that verse about submission was involved. I can tell you from personal experience, however, that you cannot abdicate your Matthew 18 responsibilities to your husband because you are called to submit to him - he is still your fellow believer in Christ. Nor are you to follow your husband into sin should he decide to go that way:

“If any of you cause one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for you if a great millstone were hung around your neck and you were thrown into the sea. If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed than to have two hands and to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire. And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life lame than to have two feet and to be thrown into hell. And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and to be thrown into hell, where their worm never dies and the fire is never quenched.

“For everyone will be salted with fire. Salt is good, but if salt has lost its saltiness, how can you season it? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.”

A marriage should be characterized by a continuous atmosphere of repentance and forgiveness, because you see each other’s sins constantly. Otherwise the sin will just pile up until the relationship dissolves - you can’t hide or avoid it, you’re too close. A confrontation should have occurred before the film started, and if the sin persisted, a second witness should have been called, and so on. One cannot use Scripture about prayer or ones about submission to dissolve other Scripture about what to do about fellow believers who are in sin.

No, but they should have the right to pursue happiness.

Nope. We rebelled against God and deserve a life of misery as punishment for our misdeeds. (Fortunately, God wants to give us better than what we deserve.)

All pursuits of happiness end in failure. If your goal is happiness, you’re never happy enough and thus you are unhappy about not being happy enough which makes you unhappy which means that you have failed. I suppose that people should be allowed to be stupid and fail horribly and inflict misery on themselves, so I guess I actually agree with @Hans_Oddcraft here.

Pursuit of God’s glory and honor has happiness as a byproduct because it straightens out the human emotional system back into a better alignment with reality and allows one to better fight off liars and nasty folk of various kinds. If you’re more emotionally comfortable with reality and understand it better, in theory you will have few negative emotional reactions in response to it, and the ones you do have will be less intense.

Likewise, if you are able to see God’s hand at work in reality and praise and thank God for giving you what you don’t deserve and thus allowing you to do what you can do in this life, you will have more positive emotional reactions to the world around you, and they will be more intense. In theory. But this comes from a long-term investment in pursuing God’s best for your life. In the short term, it will be emotionally worse because the sin nature will be screaming its dissatisfaction and fear at you, but it pays off eventually.

Ultimately “right to happiness” and “pursuit of happiness” are too vague. Let’s say I have a family member who got killed by an evil scientist who works in a virus lab, and I want to get revenge - it would make me very happy to get a bomb and blow that virus lab to smithereens. Do I have the right to blow it up? No. There are sinful ways to pursue short-term happiness that people have no right to, and they also should not pursue.

I don’t think humans are entitled to anything. Every good thing we have is a gift from God.
God has said that he wants us to have joy though, and since he created senses of humor I’d say he wants us to have happiness. That doesn’t mean He does things for us to make us happy that would hurt us in the long run. He cares too much about us for that.

The responsibility of an interpreter of artwork is to own the experiences and beliefs that lead to that interpretation, and not insult the artist or people who interpret artwork differently as a result of your interpretation.

The quote “I am not allowed to interpret the art this way” is a hypothetical example of self-talk, and no, you didn’t insult her. That whole paragraph is general guidelines and information about artwork interpretations.

I agree with Eerie and am weary of this conversation. This whole thing should have been resolved when Beck apologized to Lil. You didn’t need to chime in and start something else.

People around here need to learn how to stay out of things that don’t involve them. One person accidentally offending another isn’t an opportunity to judge and criticize and comment.

That would cut out half of the drama on the forums. A lot of the drama seems to get worse whenever someone else joins and adds their thoughts. There isn't a rule against it on the forums though, and such a rule would seem contradictory to promoting discussion and encouraging additions to the conversation (closest I can think of is not responding to bad behavior). I don't think we need a rule for it though.

This post is not intended to offend anyone and I am simply trying to explain my view and point out some difference in what people say and what they do.

This all started from me saying that a lot of the world does indeed group all men together based on a few bad apples and that the meme was a joke and nothing to get mad over.

Since then, three people have felt the need to comment on my remarks. All of whom proceeded to say people need to say out of things.

I do not understand how you can join a conversation and then tell others that they shouldn't have joined said conversation.

Says the one who is telling others to not talk since it worsens drama. There was no "drama" until people started accusing others of judging and telling them to not talk.
