How do I get into the junkyard?

Since we've been playing, we've never seen any sign of the fog clearing up, apart from in the town square itself stops blowing out the fog for a short time and starts up again very quickly after. Is the town square engine supposed to fill up with purple aether? We've seen a tiny bit at the bottom, but we've never seen it fill up after emptying our entire aethermetre into it over and over.

So far, you have described the beginning of the process of filling the engine. Fog stops and, until you fill it all the way, will restart shortly after.

Oh my gosh we managed to open it! My son noticed the cog door thing after we had been filling it, even though there was still fog in the doorway.

Awesome! The fog over the gate doesn't go away anymore, it's a visual glitch.
