Something caught her eye...a large crack in the ice at her feet. That could be dangerous. She tested the ice at her feet cautiously, then concluded that the crack was not evidence of thin ice. Instead, it looked like something had impacted it.
With slow, tentative steps, Ariella edged along to find the source. It appeared to be a man-sized hole in the ice with a deep pit underneath it. She peered over the edge, but only saw an indentation in the snow.
"Curiouser and curiouser," Ariella muttered, leaning out over the hole.
