Here is a scene in the story:
Ellery Arsenau was Scottish, as was everyone else in the castle. Except that her bloodline was a little broken up, given the fact that her grandfather was French. It had earned her the nickname Ellery the Impure by the mean little washer girls, but Ellery didn’t mind being ‘impure’. In fact she took it as a full complement.
“Don’t be stupid,” one of the washer maids taunted as she walked around the corner. Her name was Caillic, and she was the most spiteful of the maids. “You know that all this clompin’ in the wee mornin’ hours will wake the dogs! An all the barkin’ will wake the Mistress!”
Now, these girls were only thirteen years old, but in Caillic’s mind, and in the Mistress’s mind, that was already close enough to be the age where you start acting like an adult.
I haven't gotten far with the story...
