RIP Computer manufacturers. At least it is fixed now, but boy am I hopping mad. I spent 3 years booting off an HDD when I could have been booting off of a M.2 NVME SSD. Grrrr. (And yes, I did put in the bottom drive screw. And the battery. Okay I'll stop now.)

No, that's why you learn how to open your laptops with a screwdriver and Google "how to replace the hard drive" for your particular computer model as soon as the warranty expires.

There wasn't a drive letter for that ssd slot, Hans, because there was no drive in it. For all I knew the computer only had an HDD slot. It was invisible in normal operation of the device. In retrospect, it seems facepalm-y because the Linux machine has an mSATA slot, but NVME? Yeesh.

If you check the volumes they generally also have an indication of unused, or unformatted space, even on another disk.

There was no disk, only a slot for one.

The crime isn't booting off an unused disk, the crime is that the computer didn't have an SSD in its SSD slot when it was shipped when it was clearly built to have one.

Also, to find an unused disk, on Windows you have to go to Disk Manager. idk what you mean by "check the volumes". If the disk is unused and not-initialized, there won't be a drive letter for it and it won't be among the volumes.

I thought that separate disks could be seen even if they aren't formatted. I have a laptop like that.

If you've got something in the Lenovo thing that allows you to see something different, that's cool. Lenovos are considered to be among the best laptops by some.

Yeah, though Dell is making some really decent laptops these days. And the new Macs are to die for. Then again, I won't buy a device valued below $1,500.

If that's too cheap, my suggestion is to put it in a desktop and get a RTX 3090 to go with it. That will get the Python to run those imaging programs faster than you can blink.

My computer is ~$400. It's pretty good. I'm gonna wait until I a. have enough money, and b. wait until my current laptop is insufficient. The second one may take a while though... :0)
