Held an advantage on move 31 against IM Jay Bonin on chess.com today. I lost a Rook-Rook endgame, but it was still very close.

Haha. I was making a joke from your first line saying we were happy that you got in a stalemate with a FIDE player. But then you said you missed the checkmate and I put the mad face as if to say you should've done it. It was just a joke. A stalemate is still really good in that scenario.

SFDP, but to play in the championship your account needs your real name as a label - that’s part of the rules. So while I can verify my account, I don’t think I can take MsFuzzywalker to the tournament - I’d have to make a new account.

But I could change my name, I suppose, briefly, that might be more efficient. Still, while I like getting verified, the world championship qualifiers are on Saturday when I have OTB tournaments that will make me more money, so I’m going to pass on the championship. Plus also I would probably get curbstomped lol.

The championships are a joke for anyone who isn't titled since only four non-titled players in the world will pass the first round.

Well, they have to do something to reduce the millions of chess players around the world down to a reasonable competition size.

The theory is that titled players have proven that they actually have skill, and they don’t want to waste time on Dan who barely knows how to move the pieces and Sally who insists on playing the Double Grob Variation. Obviously those people are not going to win the World Championship, so it pays to eliminate them right off the bat.

SFDP, but if you got out of the first round you’d probably have a fighting chance, seeing as you’ve been doing fairly well against titled players recently.

Couple of tips for younger players:

Scholastic chess tournaments exist - these can be more team-oriented and you'll be playing against players your own age, which will be less intense than going to a chess club and facing old people. Though I see kids doing that at my chess club too.
I recommend Josh Waitzkin's Attacking Chess. It's a good book on chess that is very accessible for younger readers to understand - the author wrote the book when he was 18 about his younger years playing chess.
