Yeah, kinda! I don't have as much practice with them, though.
I tried the same thing. Later, however, I found out that they're actually for blending/smudging. (That may be why my first drawing was a bit. . . okay, it was scary. You did WAY better than I did!)
Usually, I just use my thumb, but sometimes, that's not small enough for what I need to do.
Honestly, it depends on how clean it is. If you want a darker shade, I'd suggest using a dirtier one. For a light shade, clean it first, and then shade.
Steady hands are also important. I'm not sure why (maybe it's because of my instruments), but my hands seem to be fairly strong and steady. Otherwise, my blending tool kinda. . . skids across the page.
