The Arbitrary Antics of Ariella Newheart

Arona opened the door quickly and peeked her head out. She yawned with exaggeration. Ariella winced as the sound disturbed the quietude. "What's up, Ari?" she asked. Ariella noticed that Arona held a screwdriver and, as always, her fingers were streaked with grease.

Ariella handed her the lumps of metal--several small, golden gizmos covered with brownish rust. "I found these on the beach. Hopefully you can use them. Also, meet me in the alcove at the end of the hall before breakfast. I need to talk to you."

The Arbitrary Antics of Ariella Newheart

Ariella had begun to relax when the knock sounded again. She turned toward the sound and went over to the window. A small object was perched on the windowsill. A bird? She slid open the window and shivered as icy air wafted inside.

The bird was mechanical, marked with orange and white stripes. It had tapped on the window with its beak. Ariella could have sworn it looked exactly like one of Arona's Airmail Auto-birds. Was it? It had to be. Ariella cautiously grabbed the bird and it fluttered its broad wings mechanically.

The wings were made of durable fabric and looked like miniature kites or boat sails. The body of the Auto-bird had a fog boiler in it. There was also a metal tube attached to one of the bird's legs.
