Arcstorm cleared his head from the painful ringing and rose to his full height. He looked around, trying to see what was going on.
The landscape was devastated from whatever Torthai had done. There was a lot of fire, burning brightly. One of the hunters was running towards Torthai. Another leaped over the flames and began running towards Arcstorm. He shot a burst of air at the hunter, but she dodged and kept coming. Levreshar stood beside him and blew a line of flames on the ground, sending the new hunter dodging for cover.
Levreshar looked urgently at Arcstorm, "This is chaos!" he shouted, "We have to leave here!"
Arcstorm spotted Everest sprawled in the forest, and then flicked his gaze over the landscape again, "We can't leave them. They won't make it without our help!"
"The Empire is too strong! Too many!" Levreshar roared, eyes pleading, "I can't lose my brother again!"
Arcstorm looked at Levreshar. He now had little doubt that this dragon was his brother. Arcstorm believed that his twin was sincerely trying to look out for him.
He's right, Arcstorm thought, We can't win this. We need to save ourselves.
Arcstorm nodded and looked away, and both dragons raised their wings to take flight away from the battlefield.
This feels so wrong, Arcstorm thought, craning his neck to look back. He saw a dragon hunter jumping towards Torthai. He spotted Seraphine for the first time, beyond the flames, battling the red dragon. Arcstorm set his jaw.
"What are you waiting for?" Levreshar asked.
Dark clouds gathered overhead, and Arcstorm lowered his wings and began to turn back to the destruction.
"What are you thinking!?" Levreshar ran toward him, "I won't let you go!"
Arcstorm saw his brother, realized Levreshar's fear, and Arcstorm's own thoughts agreed. Dark whispers echoed in his mind, I should abandon these foolish dragons! They don't deserve my friendship! I wanted to leave them anyways.
Arcstorm frowned at Levreshar, He's right. We don't have any chance. We need to save ourselves and fight another day.
He looked back at the dragons, alone against dark forces. The wind picked up.
"I will not let you be hurt!" Levreshar said, "We must go!"
Arcstorm turned to his brother. Although reason seemed to go against it, Arcstorm chose his heart, "I will not abandon these innocent dragons to the Empire! If you must protect me...then come with me! Fight!" he roared, and ran.
The new hunter was bearing down on them. With a beat of his wings, Arcstorm took flight, leaving Levreshar standing stunned behind him. Arcstorm twirled his wings, spinning once to dodge her and then flapping his wings again, knocking her down with the force of the blast. He rose higher into the lightning-charged sky, looking down to see Seraphine and Abraxas fighting. He was on top of her, clawing. She slashed him with her claw and knocked him away with her wing. Arcstorm dived. Abraxas was speaking.
"Where are your friends now when you need them the most?" he taunted with a dark voice. He moved to attack her.
Streaks of lightning shot from the thundering sky into Arcstorm as he fell. Blue electricity surged through his body. He spread his wings, breaking his descent. He released a roar that echoed through the battlefield, and he shot a powerful, searing blast of lightning into the red dragon. It connected and blew him away from Seraphine.
Arcstorm landed next to the dragoness, met her eyes for a moment, and then turned to Abraxas and growled a warning.
