I have been self-taught up until now, I have just begun an art course.
For my self-teaching, I study other's artwork (so I have been all around these art topics!) and visit their websites, I have watched several art videos on various things, but I mostly study the subject itself. If I am drawing, say, a cat, I will find a cat and follow it everywhere with my sketchpad. I really love to discover the anatomy of my subject, as it really helps me understand how to draw it in a more 3D perspective. Not to be gross or anything, but for example I would look up the skeletal structure of a cat, then the muscle structure, skin structure and fur. Then I would "build" the cat on my paper!! But it works so well for me! It is my favorite technique. Call me weird, but my favorite pastime is sitting/walking around, looking at anything, and wondering about its anatomy and how I could draw it.
