(OOC: Sorry for the bit o' the wait!)
"Be good, you two. I'll probably be back in a few hours."
That was the last thing I heard, but I heard it very faintly, since my mind isn't focused on the others' business. It's focused on Lightscape, and his possible whereabouts. Ariella already said she didn't know where he is, so I'm going to have to look on my own. I sigh and shake my head, and I suddenly hear, "Where are Tyler and Iris?"
I glance back at Arona, the one who asked the question.
Ariella runs over to her sister and gasps in the realization that Iris and Tyler aren't still here. "But... They were just here... I told Nikko..." She appears to be thinking, and she didn't even finish her sentence. I know how that can be.
Peregrine scrunches her eyebrows. "Where could they have gone?"
"Lots of places," Ariella whispers quietly, still seemingly distracted by her thoughts.
"I'll go and find them!" Peregrine exclaims.
I immediately take a step forward and add, "I'll go with you. I... Uh... I could use some fresh air."
Peregrine shakes her head in thought. "I don't know... You did just come from outside, and I'd say you probably had enough fresh air."
"No, trust me," I reply. Peri still gives me a skeptical look, so I add, "Those days working with the detectives at least taught me a few things about tracking people down."
That seemed to settle the matter for Peregrine. She nods and opens the door, grabbing her coat. "See you, Ari!"
Ariella waves back. "Bye, Peri and Nola! Be careful out there."
With a nod, Peri and I exit the tea shop.
Finally, we're outside. Ah, yes. I love air.
I inhale the fresh, crisp, cold air, and exhale - finally without a quiver in my breath. There is something consoling about both fireplaces and cold air, both used when necessary.
I keep walking with Peri, and I notice a black mark on the ground.
"Peri," I say as she stops her momentum and rejoins me in looking at this dirty mark that resembles the shape of a shoe. "That has to be a footprint, yes?"
Peregrine raises a skeptical eyebrow. "It's definitely a footprint, but I don't know if it's Iris' or Tyler's. Highly unlikely, since Aislinn probably trained them well."
"Yeah, but Tyler's shoes were especially dirty back at the tea shop," I replied. "I think it was grease."
She gave me one of those "are-you-kidding-me-that's-crazy" looks. "So that's what you do when you look distracted in a conversation? Notice the dirt on people's shoes?"
I shrug and decide to follow the footsteps, even if they weren't Tyler's. It just feels good to be chasing a possible suspect, whether it's true or not.
As we followed the tracks further, they started to become less and less visible. Of course! If is grease or oil from the bottom of those shoes, it will disappear after a while.
Right before we approach Lukas' Workshop, the tracks fully stop.
Peregrine sighs. "Nola, I admire your tracking skills, but we may be chasing the wrong person. And now the tracks are gone."
I raise an eyebrow. "Do you propose a better idea?"
After a few moments of an intense stare, Peregrine takes a deep breath and finally replies, "Maybe."
