Most people want people to like them, but "want" is very different that "need". What we need is to be loved. The sad thing is that not everyone is loved like they should be.
Being loved is different than being liked. You can love someone very much and wish them all the good in the world even when you have no fond feelings towards them. As long as you treat them lovingly, you will not need to worry about liking them. In fact, the more you love them, the more you will like them.
