"This way!" I call to the others, beckoning them to follow.
I begin a mad dash towards the Grotto, my safe haven. Draven, Glow, Eerie, and Erik in tow. Behind us I can hear the circus master shouting after us.
"Come back here you little rats!" he snarls as he attempts to reclaim his footing.
I spin on my heals and yank Glow and Dray into a hidden ally way, who in turn pull Erik and Eerie in.
"Climb in the second story window, quick!" I whisper to the group.
"How are we supposed to get up there?" asks Eerie.
"Here," I turn a large crate upside down and place it under the window, "Use that, how hurry!"
The four of us scramble through the window and onto the second floor. Once we've all found our footing, I lead them deep into the decrepit house and out the back door into the heart of the Grotto. I dash over to my metal crate home and open the lid.
"Everyone, get in! It's a little cramped, but he won't look here."
Once all my friends are inside, I begin to close the lid. "Wait!" protests Dray, holding the lid open, "What about you?"
"I live here, Dray," I reply with a smile, "I can blend in as well as any banana peel!"
I close the lid of my metal crate and pile junk from a rubbish heap on top of it. Then, I hurry off to a safe distance. Just one minute later, two giant men in colorful, identical outfits stomp through the grotto carrying lanterns.
"Any signs of that freak?" one asks the other.
"Nope," the other replies, crushing a barrel in his hands, "This place is such a dump, finding that thing is gonna be like hun'in for daisies in the snow!"
I hold my breath, the thugs were getting closer and closer to my metal crate. If they thought is was worth investigating . . .
Why did I tell them to hide there? I might have led them into a trap!
Then do something, K, now is the time to be brave! said the voice of my long lost friend.
I gasp aloud at hearing her, gaining the attention of the thugs.
"Who's there?" demands one.
"Come out now, or we're coming in!" threatens the other, punching his hand for emphasis.
"Wotcha want ya ninny?" I snap, imitating the grotto accent.
"Oh, it's just an urchin, nothing to see here." says one boredly.
"Wait . . ." commands the other, his eyes locking with mine. "Maybe she saw it hide somewhere."
"Saw wot now?" I ask, cocking my head and trying to ignore my pulse beating in my ears.
The thug leans over me menacingly, his shadow blocking the light from his lantern "A freak came this way tonight, it's a young thing, likes to cover it's face with a wooden mask. You haven't seen one of those around here, have you?"
I swallow hard, "The only freak I'd sees tonight is a standin in front o me now!"
I dodge as the thug tries to grab me in his gigantic hands, and dash past his double.
"Quick, after her!" the first thug calls.
"But aren't we looking for-"
"We'll find the freak in the morning when the sun's up, but that little brat insulted me to my face!"
"But the boss said-"
"When the boss ain't here, I'm the boss, and I say after that brat!"
Thankfully, by this point I was well hidden away from them. However, there were still two Goliaths stomping around the grotto. I circled back to my metal crate and opened the side door. All my friends are still there, and surprised by the second exit.
"Draven, Glow, how do you feel about fighting two colorful giants?"
