I walked inside of the beacon to grab my assignment for the day. I hoped it was exiting, like smashing a set amount of automatons because their numbers grew too high, or sneaking into someone else's property in order to tear down their poster that was supporting The Empire. I didn't want something like my last quest. I had been stuck on that one for days, and I needed to talk to a high-ranking Resistance member to bump me past it.
The quest went something like this: Lucas asked his Isha-class automaton to bring him papers for “research purposes", but the automaton dropped them on accident, and they blew all over No Mans Landing.
In Lucas' own words, he said, "Lad, you're the logical choice to look for my papers." He stared at me for a long while before adding, "Also, could you look for my cat?"
I couldn't believe that I had just been assigned to do that. All of my skills were being wasted on searching for papers?
Where was I going with this...? Oh, right.
I looked at the quest board at the bottom of The Beacon. There was only one quest left.
I tore the paper off of the mission board and read it. As I read the quest however, my expression changed from bad to worse. I read through the quest a second time, and then a third just to make sure.
The quest read, “High Tech Aether Sky-Pirate Airship constructed. Crew needed. P.s. You may need your Dreamweaver.”
I couldn’t believe this. The Resistance was going so low as to become full-fledged pirates, now? Was I going to be a pirate? If I did decide to sign up, I could get away from these absurd quests from Lucas...
I thought about joining for about a minute before throwing the paper over my shoulder. "Forget it,” I said to myself. There is no way I’m going to risk my skin on an airship. Those things have been known to have engine failures and crash into mountains. Since there was no other quest for me to take, I decided that I would just destroy automatons until I got bored.
I heard Selena call Dath, another Resister in The Beacon. I was curious why Selena called him, so I followed Dath up the stairs and listened in on the conversation.
As fate would have it, they were talking about the... how did the quest put it, High Tech Aether Sky-Pirate Airship. Dath was going to be drafted into becoming a crewman aboard the airship. He had better things to do with his life than sail around in the sky and crash into mountains.
When they finally finished talking, Dath headed towards the stairs again. I walked in the room nonchalantly, like I hadn't just eavesdropped on their entire conversation. Luckily, no one seemed to notice me.
As I approached the exit of The Beacon, I heard Selena’s voice behind me. "Are you interested in becoming a pirate, dear?"
I shut my eyes tight, realizing that I had just volunteered.
After Selena’s lengthy talk with me, I realized that I was not going to win that battle. I was now a pirate whether I liked it or not. At least I wasn’t the only one suffering. Dath would keep me company whether he liked it or not.
After I packed my things, I fished in my pocket and pulled out my Aethermeter. I decided to take the quest’s advice and activate my Dreamweaver. When I did this, something completely unexpected happened.
Oh, right. Airships are meant to be in the sky. I looked up to see a large vessel hovering there. It was probably the pirate airship I was looking for. The words "The Scarlet Shepherd" were pasted on the side of it. I tilted my head. How would I get up there?
As if I had summoned it to me, the Airship lowered towards me. The first thought that went through my mind was "It's going to crash on me!" But the ship slowed. It stopped a few feet from the ground, and a ladder dropped to the ground. I sighed and shook my head. What was going to happen now? Is some captain with a big hat going to come and greet me...?
